February 1, 2013

The OSC Award (The Award for Distinguished Contribution) was given to Dr. Teruyo Sakakura, Professor Emeritus at the Mie University. OSC Award is awarded to people who had contributed tremendously to both the establishment and development of OSC, as an expression of gratitude and respect. The award ceremony was held at OSC Research Exchange Meeting on February 1st. Dr. Sakakura also gave an award reception speech. Dr. Sakakura talked about memories of the time Dr. Hayashizaki joined RIKEN around 30 years ago, as well as talked about her central belief - “Heterogeneity”. Heterogeneity means consisting of many different kinds of things. Organisms are not only made from their components. It is the interaction between evolution of living things and physical, chemical evolution which made organisms over a long period of time that is balancing our biosphere through biological diversity. Dr. Sakakura showed this through many photos and artworks.
